Today, we had a special guest come in – she was going to perform James Humberstone’s composition Fantasia while we recording! Today, we were able to use the skills we had learnt a few weeks ago, and became the film crew. We had to set everything up by ourselves as a class – James sat on the outskirts and watched. We made choices about where extra lighting would go (after looking at many different placements) as well as where we would place the cameras we had. We also had to decide where we would place the mics – figuring out the places that would provide us with the best sound for the recording was a little tricky.
Because our class is a bigger class, it was easy to often feel like I was standing around doing nothing. I am not the most skilled when it comes to these things, as I haven’t had opportunities in the past to experiment with these skills, nor have I been taught about them in the past. I wanted to be involved as much as I could! Our class had elected one our peers to be the director, so I often went to him asking what he wanted me to do, or how I could help someone out with something. This lead me to being able to be involved in various tasks during the afternoon.
We did a few takes so that we could get different camera angles with cameras that moved, adjusting things such as lighting and other placements if it was needed. Below, I have included a couple of photos that one of our classmates was able to capture on the day (I’m the one in the pink cap!).
