So where do I start?

Starting a composition can often be quite difficult and intimidating. Where do you start? What do you start with? When I first started my composition task for my 3rd assessment in the course Composition in Music Education, I did not really know what I wanted to do. I was just listening to music on Monday afternoon when my first idea came to me – in one of the songs that came on my shuffle, I heard four notes just repeated over and over in the background. I liked the idea of doing this, so I decided I would put this in my composition. Just like in my baby steps, I chose the tonality and the key I wanted to use in my composition – A minor. Minor keys are a personal favourite of mine, and there’s just something about A minor that I love. Once I had decided on that, I decided that I’d focus my piece on the arpeggio of this scale.
